Every gym bro has an opinion about protein powder. Half of them swear by whatever’s newest on Instagram. The other half have been buying the same gold tub of Optimum Nutrition for a decade. I’m firmly in the second camp.
I’ve gone through about twenty tubs of Gold Standard over the past few years, mostly Double Rich Chocolate. Here’s my honest take on whether it still deserves its spot as the best-selling whey protein on Amazon.

Each serving has 24 grams of protein with whey isolate as the primary ingredient, plus 5.5 grams of BCAAs. It mixes cleanly in a shaker with water or milk and comes in over 15 flavors. It’s third-party tested through Informed Choice, which matters if you compete in tested sports. A 5-pound tub runs about $73, which works out to roughly a dollar per serving.
Features Worth Knowing
Mixability is where Gold Standard earns its reputation. Two scoops in a shaker with 12 ounces of cold water and twenty seconds of shaking gives you a smooth drink with no clumps. I’ve used cheaper proteins that turned into cement at the bottom of the shaker no matter how hard I shook them. This one dissolves like it’s supposed to.
The flavor selection is enormous. Double Rich Chocolate tastes like chocolate milk, not like chemicals. Vanilla Ice Cream is mild and works well in smoothies. I tried Cookies and Cream once and it was weirdly sweet, like drinking a melted milkshake. Stick with the classics.
The protein profile is clean. Whey isolate first, then concentrate, then peptides. You’re getting fast-absorbing protein with minimal filler. For post-workout recovery, that matters.
The Good and the Bad
The taste-to-nutrition ratio is the best I’ve found in this price range. It doesn’t taste amazing, but it tastes good enough that I’ve never dreaded drinking it. One scoop with black coffee in the morning has been my weekday routine for over a year.
The formula has changed recently, and not everyone is happy about it. Optimum Nutrition apparently removed digestive enzymes from the blend, and some users report more bloating and gas than before. I haven’t noticed a difference, but I’m not lactose-sensitive. If you are, this could be a real issue. Several people on Reddit have complained about stomach cramps from newer batches that they never had with older ones.
The price has also crept up. Two years ago a 5-pound tub was closer to $58. At $73, it’s still reasonable per serving, but the gap between Gold Standard and cheaper options like MyProtein is growing. And some flavors are genuinely bad. I tried Extreme Milk Chocolate once and it tasted like soap.
How It Stacks Up
Dymatize ISO100 has slightly more protein per serving (25g) and less fat, but it’s more expensive and has fewer flavors. BSN Syntha-6 tastes better but has more carbs and calories, making it less ideal for cutting. MyProtein Impact Whey is cheaper but uses concentrate only, which absorbs slower. For a good balance of taste, nutrition, and price, Gold Standard is still the safest pick. If you’re fueling for long days outdoors, pair it with some Quest protein bars or an electrolyte mix for a solid stack.
The Bottom Line
Buy Gold Standard if you want reliable protein that mixes well and tastes good enough every day. Skip it if you’re lactose-sensitive or chasing the cheapest cost per gram.
